Book Submission Guidelines Subatomic Books publishes fiction and non-fiction by new and established writers. The basic guideline: if it's cool, we're interested.

Fiction categories: speculative fiction, magic realism, weird, literary, fringe, science fiction, fantasy, counter culture.

Non-fiction: humor, music, counter culture.

What we don’t want: conventional genre writing. No romances, westerns, military action, mystery. No inspirational or Christian or whatever the hell that is. No books reliant on established SF/F tropes such as robots, spaceships, dragons, elves, brave heroes who are the only ones who can stop a dark evil that threatens the land, vampires who are sexy/sexually adventurous/angst-ridden, and so on. You know the cliches, both old and new. We hate them. Boring!

More thoughts on things that may seem to fit into our guidelines but are still annoying: tattoos, piercings, “modern primitives,” lesbian psychics, urban fantasy (or any other clumsy juxtaposition of genres), youth culture stories reliant on teen angst for a plot, unmotivated heroes to whom weird stuff happens and they react, unmotivated heroes to whom bad stuff happens and they react, unmotivated heroes period, cheap CIA/UFO conspiracies, teenage vampire killers, anti-heroes meant to shock us (the life of a child molester, etc.).

We hope that helps.

We’d like to see books that are brave, smart, fun, challenging, unique. In other words, cowboys versus dinosaurs. Except you’re too late on that one. Still... perfection. And with an elephant!

We have a small staff who are juggling a lot of plates with our roster of initial offerings, so we’re not actively seeking unsolicited book manuscripts. However, if you are convinced we need your book in our catalog, please send us:
  1. A cover letter describing your book idea, previous publications, and some sense of who you think will buy the book.
  2. Word count and your contact info.
  3. Genre or subgenre (yes, we know you’re uncategorizable. Just try).
  4. A two page synopsis of the plot.
  5. An email address we can use to contact you for manuscript requests or rejections. We’re not very paper oriented, sorry.
You can use our email address, submissions@subatomicbooks.com. Please include the cover letter and synopsis IN THE BODY OF THE EMAIL, not as an attachment. Thus we all avoid contamination, right?

Please put in the SUBJECT of your email “Subatomic Book Query” or you will end up in our spam filter.

Alternately, you can mail it (and a SASE) to:
Subatomic Books
1942 SE 30th Ave, Suite D.
Portland, OR 97214

We will strive to respond to queries within 60 days. Should you send a barrage of queries about your query? Naw.
